“Laughter ahead! Gad and Rannells are Broadway’s cutest couple” – The Washington Post
Garner Galleria Theatre
The Garner Galleria Theatre is the place to be for this award-winning revival. From 2 November 2024 until 4 May 2025, GUTENBERG! – THE MUSICAL is coming to Denver with nonstop laughter, silliness, and good times. The Mile High City is the top destination for this must-see musical. Only the towering skyscrapers could top Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells’ epic performances! GUTENBERG! – THE MUSICAL at The Garner Galleria Theatre is set to recur weekly on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Synopsis
In this two-person musical spoof, a couple of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their brand new, ill-advised plot – a big, splashy musical show about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With a never-ending supply of enthusiasm, Bud Davenport (Andrew Rannells) and Doug Simon (Josh Gad) sing all the songs and perform all the parts in their goofy historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers at the audition will give them that elusive Broadway contract that they’ve always dreamed of.
“Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells couldn’t be better” – The New York Times
Creative Team
Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad take on the lead role as Bud Davenport and Doug Simon, respectively. Andrew Rannells is a Grammy Award-winning and two-time Tony Award nominated actor who you might recognize from the recent Hulu limited series “Welcome to Chippendales.” What’s more, he has starred in Netflix’s The Prom, The Boys in the Band, as well as Showtime’s, “Black Monday” and HBO’s “Girls,” both clinching Critics Choice Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Andrew Rannells’ Broadway credits include: The Boys in the Band, Hairspray, Jersey Boys, The Book of Mormon, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Hamilton, as well as Falsettos. This star has even appeared in movies like A Simple Favor, Why Him? and The Intern, as well as lent his voice to “The Simpsons,” “Big Mouth,” and “Invincible.”
Meanwhile, Josh Gad is a talented actor, singer, and comedian who is well known for voicing Olaf in the popular Frozen franchise. Alongside Andrew Rannells, he played Elder Arnold Cunningham in the Broadway hit musical The Book of Mormon, as well as LeFou in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. For his charming role as Olaf, Josh Gad snagged two Annie Awards, and for his talent in The Book of Mormon, he won a Grammy Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. On the big screen, Josh Gad has starred in huge movies like Murder on the Orient Express, The Wedding Ringer, and the critically acclaimed Marshall.
The creative team for GUTENBERG! – THE MUSICAL include Anthony King and Scott Brown (Book, Music and Lyrics), Alex Timbers (Director), Scott Pask (Set Designer), Emily Rebholz (Costume Designer), Jeff Croiter (Lighting Designer), and M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer (Sound Designer).
History and Awards
GUTENBERG! – THE MUSICAL opened up on Broadway at the James Earl Jones Theatre on 12 October 2023. Helmed by visionary director Alex Timbers, the Broadway production featured Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells. Scott Brown and Anthony King originally developed the show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City, where it ran for more than a year, boasting the author Ken Keech with Charlie Todd assuming the role of director and Barry Wyner wearing the hat of musical director. The musical was part of the 2005 and 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival and played at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London in January 2006.
Award nominations include: Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical (2024), Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical (2007), Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical (2007), and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical (2007).
Review
“Credit also to Timbers and his snappy direction and the ingenious baseball cap bit that still manages to surprise and delight till the end. But props are few and far between — this is a two-man show that puts on full display just what makes Gad and Rannells such special performers. They’re clearly having a great time and hope you are, too. Certainly, other performers could endeavor to make their marks on the roles — and have — but one of the major selling points of Gutenberg! is the “reunion” of Gad and Rannells. And, boy, do they sell it. Exclamation point” – Entertainment Weekly
